Our lovely widows have been invited to dust off their knitting and crochet needles and brush up on their painting skills with Melbourne Legacy’s Pen Pal Craft Program. The program has 3 options to choose from including knitting, crochet and water painting kit. Upon completing their unique pieces, widows would send them to Legacy along with a special note, which would then be gifted to one of the other ladies participating in the program. Some examples of these beautifully crafted knits are below.

Bronwyn, our Programs Coordinator, introduced the program in late March as a fun and safe way for the ladies to stay connected during the COVID-19 isolation period. Since then, more than 150 widows have joined.

Not only has it been delightful to see all of the intricate knitting and colourful paintings, but also the messages exchanged between the ladies who have commonly expressed feelings of joy and nostalgia while engaging in their chosen activity. Some thoughts from the ladies are as follows:

“… this reminded me of when I used to crochet army nets during WWII”

“… making this painting took me to another world”

“… knitting is one of my therapeutic pass times and I have enjoyed this project”

“… when you wear it think of a lady who is 98 years old”

“… it has been a pleasure to knit this scarf”

Many of our widows shared their appreciation for Melbourne Legacy’s ongoing aid. We will always be here to support our beneficiaries in times of need, no matter what life throws at them.

Below are some clever artworks of the widows who chose the water painting kit.
