Every day, Melbourne Legacy supports children and young people whose lives have been shaped by a parent's military service. Through practical care, trusted guidance, education support, youth programs and camps, we help children build confidence, create lasting friendships, and feel part of a community that understands them. 

For Will and Ella Beckwith, Legacy became a constant source of support after the loss of their father, Peter, who was serving aboard HMAS Newcastle during operations in East Timor when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour linked to radiation exposure during his service.

Their mother, Rebecca, was left grieving the loss of her husband while raising a four-year-old son and seven-month-old daughter alone. Facing financial hardship and uncertainty, she turned to Melbourne Legacy, following Peter's wishes that Legacy would be there for his family.

Legacy provided immediate practical support, helping stabilise the family's financial situation and connecting Rebecca with a community of other young widows who understood her experience. Over the years, Legacy remained a constant source of support through difficult milestones, anniversaries, and the challenges of raising children without their father.

For Will and Ella, Legacy camps and youth programs provided opportunities for connection, friendship, and experiences their family otherwise could not afford. These programs helped reduce isolation and create lasting memories during their childhood. 

And as they grew, Legacy grew with them, providing opportunities that helped them build confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging. Today, they proudly volunteer as Legacy Youth Leaders, supporting the next generation of Legacy children. 

The Beckwith family's story demonstrates the long-term impact of service on families and the importance of ongoing support. Through Legacy's relationship-based care, Rebecca, William, and Ella were able to rebuild stability, remain connected to their community, and move forward with confidence after experiencing profound loss.

As more veteran families become eligible for support, more children will need someone to turn to.
