Melbourne Legacy’s 2025-26 Pre-Budget Submission

March 14, 2025

Melbourne Legacy, dedicated solely to supporting the families of veterans, recently released its Pre-Budget Submission for the 2025–26 Federal Budget.

The submission calls on the Australian Government to invest $2.31 million over three years—equating to $770,000 per year—to sustain and expand Melbourne Legacy’s innovative service delivery model. This funding is critical to enhance family wellbeing, reduce isolation, and build long-term resilience among families impacted by military service.

For over a century, Melbourne Legacy has been at the forefront of providing holistic, lifelong support to families of those who have given their lives or health in service to our country. In the wake of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide, the demand for our services has surged, with referrals nearly doubling. Our submission highlights the urgent need for recurrent government funding to ensure that every family receives the support they need when they need it most.

The Pre-Budget Submission outlines how Melbourne Legacy’s tailored service delivery model—anchored in professional case management and robust community support—maximises the impact of every dollar spent.

In 2024 alone, Melbourne Legacy invested over $1.49 million to directly support the families of veterans, providing personalised support and access to services and programs for 4,885 individuals impacted by their loved one’s service.

Melbourne Legacy’s submission underscores the vital role of government investment in delivering consistent, impactful support to families who have borne the weight of military service. Without adequate funding, the financial and emotional hardships faced by these families will only intensify. Our Pre-Budget Submission is a call to action for the Government to partner with us in building a sustainable future where every veteran family can thrive.
