How We Help

Professional Case Management & Peer-to-Peer Support

Melbourne Legacy’s professional case management service is grounded in a psychosocial model of assessment, delivered within a trauma-informed environment. This approach ensures we provide exceptional, industry-leading support to the ex-service community while upholding professional boundaries and fostering the well-being of both our clients and team.

Our skilled social workers and mental health professionals act as connectors, bridging families to vital services and resources tailored to their unique needs. Backed by a network of professionals and peers, we provide holistic support that empowers families to navigate challenges and build brighter futures.

Education & Development

We provide a comprehensive suite of services designed to enrich the educational and social well-being of children and young people. Through targeted funding, advocacy, and financial counselling, we ensure access to tailored activities that meet each individual’s unique needs.

A key component of our support is our structured and professionally supervised youth camps. These transformative experiences go beyond recreation, offering a vital platform for building social connections, fostering peer support, and nurturing resilience and leadership skills. In a safe and enjoyable environment, participants develop lasting friendships and the confidence to thrive.

Fostering Connection

Melbourne Legacy is dedicated to combating isolation and fostering a sense of belonging among our beneficiaries. We create supportive networks, such as Widows’ Clubs, and provide practical assistance, including transport support for accessing appointments and events, ensuring that everyone can participate fully in their community.

Understanding the unique challenges faced by families of veterans—who often experience disruption and disconnection due to frequent relocations during service—we prioritise programs that connect people with others who share similar experiences. Building these vital peer-to-peer relationships strengthens resilience, provides emotional support, and fosters a shared sense of understanding.

Our targeted initiatives also address the needs of specific groups, including beneficiaries with disabilities, while we work continually to identify and close gaps in support across diverse cohorts. By emphasising community engagement and creating secure, nurturing environments statewide, we strive to alleviate social isolation and empower families of veterans to thrive.

Pensions Advocacy

Melbourne Legacy provides expert guidance and advocacy to help beneficiaries navigate the often complex process of accessing entitlements through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA). Understanding and securing these entitlements can be challenging, which is why our dedicated Veteran Family Liaison Officer works closely with families of veterans to provide clarity, support, and tailored advice.

We ensure beneficiaries are fully informed about their rights and entitlements, offering step-by-step assistance throughout the entire claims process. Our commitment is to ensure that every family receives the benefits they are entitled to, empowering them to build stability and resilience for the future.

Financial Literacy (Bravery Trust Collaboration)

Melbourne Legacy’s Financial Literacy program, delivered in collaboration with Bravery Trust, is embedded in our service delivery, simultaneously helping our Case Managers to grater understand the holistic needs of our families of veterans and for our families to build the skills and knowledge needed in financial literacy and money management to ensure sustainable, long-term post-traumatic growth.

Our Case Managers work closely with Bravery Trust’s expert Financial Counsellors to provide our beneficiaries with tools and advice on creating long-term financial stability through individual assessment and tailored mentorship.

Legatee Support

At the core of Melbourne Legacy’s mission are our dedicated volunteer Legatees, who provide vital one-on-one companionship to families of veterans. Supported by ongoing training and development in areas such as Mental Health First Aid and Youth Mental Health First Aid, Legatees are equipped with the skills to foster trauma-informed relationships and deliver compassionate, informed care.

Working hand-in-hand with our professional Case Managers, Legatees ensure families feel understood, supported, and empowered throughout their journey. This collaborative approach guarantees no family of a veteran is left to face their challenges alone, creating a network of care built on expertise, empathy, and connection.

Our Advocacy

As the only ex-service organisation dedicated solely to supporting the families of veterans, we are committed to not only assisting, but amplifying the voices and experiences of this often overlooked and underrepresented cohort.

From individual advocacy to systemic advocacy, we work to ensure the voices of the families of veterans are heard when it comes to improving and reforming the service sector.

Legatees

Legatees are the dedicated volunteers at the heart of Melbourne Legacy, committed to supporting the families of veterans. With compassion and a strong sense of duty, they provide practical assistance, emotional support, and community advocacy, ensuring families have the resources and guidance they need to navigate life’s challenges.

Legatees play a vital role in fostering connection and reducing isolation, regularly engaging with families through visits, calls, and community events. They act as trusted allies, mentoring families, advocating for access to entitlements, and facilitating meaningful social connections that build resilience and belonging.

By working closely with families and Legacy’s professional team, Legatees uphold the promise to honour service by caring for those left behind. Their contributions create lasting impact, empowering families to rebuild, thrive, and feel part of a supportive community.
