Hannah Helps is a resilient and driven young woman living in outer Melbourne. The daughter of two Defence Force veterans, both of whom struggled significantly with mental health issues after transitioning out of service, Hannah was forced to make tough decisions from an early age to protect both herself and her family.
Hannah has seen firsthand the long-term impacts of trauma, and what happens when veterans bring the battle home. She also deeply understands the challenges that families of veterans face when adequate mental health support is not accessible.
Her mother served in the Air Force and battled ongoing mental health challenges, contributing to eventual estrangement. Her father served in the Army and also suffered from mental health and addiction issues, but has since sought support and become a mental health professional. His journey of recovery and service to others inspired Hannah's path into mental health studies.
For Hannah, Legacy has been a source of stability during difficult and uncertain times. When Hannah first connected with Legacy, they linked her with a dedicated Legatee, Linda. A veteran herself who understands the unique challenges Hannah faces, Linda checks in often, and the two have formed a close bond.
Legacy has always been supportive and helpful…they’re always asking if I need help or want help."
As well as connecting Hannah with Linda, Legacy played a key role in supporting Hannah and helping her access education to ensure she didn’t miss out on opportunities. Hannah is currently working as a teacher’s aide and with the support of Melbourne Legacy, nearing completion of her Diploma in Mental Health. This year she also plans to begin a Bachelor of Social Work, aiming to help others facing similar challenges to those she has gone through.
Hannah’s passion and determination to ensuring people can access appropriate mental health support is clear. Through her firsthand experience she knows the particular importance of veterans and their families receiving constant and meaningful support.
“If they had gotten the mental health support that they probably should have got when they left the Defence Force, they probably wouldn’t be in the situation they were in.” Hannah shares.
