Sally* shares the story of her family's remarkable strength in the face of ongoing challenges following her husband, David's* service.
David put his life on the line in the military. Back at home he's treated as a nobody.”

When Sally* first met David*, she was captivated by his courage and dedication in serving his country. But when disaster struck, his heroic exterior was deeply wounded beneath the surface, profoundly shaping their family’s journey. David, a veteran who endured the unimaginable trauma of the Black Hawk tragedy, a helicopter crash that claimed the lives of 18 of his best friends, struggled with severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Over time, the unspoken burden of loss and survivor guilt led him down a path of isolation and anger. For Sally, supporting David meant sacrificing her own well‐being—a commitment that would test the limits of love and resilience.
Sally’s story is not one of despair, but rather of a family’s remarkable strength in the face of ongoing challenges. Their children, Tina* and Sam* have been impacted by his avoidance and anxiety. "They have never seen their dad socialise. So they too are very withdrawn," shares Sally.
This has affected us beyond the immediate family. We have little contact with family or friends. We’re not easy to be around.”
Community is an integral part of the healing process. When Sally was first introduced to Melbourne Legacy’s support for her children, she didn’t realise the impact a network of support could have. What started as Tina and Sam attending one of Melbourne Legacy’s youth camps, connecting with other children of veterans, has turned into a lifeline that Sally couldn’t have anticipated.
I just really appreciated being able to talk to someone – that I knew I could call Legacy for help. It sounds silly, but I really couldn’t think what else to do. I don’t really have anyone else in my life I can turn to these days.”

To heal, people like Sally, Tina and Sam need professional support tailored to their specific needs and circumstances by people trained in the complex needs of veteran families.
Melbourne Legacy provided the help that Sally’s family so desperately needed, emphasising the genuine care and proactive approach of their Case Managers, particularly Sally’s Case Manager, Carol* and her Legatee Suzanne. Through regular check-ins, expert advice and tailored referral pathways, Melbourne Legacy offered practical solutions—ranging from financial assistance for school supplies when both Sally and David couldn’t work, to mental health support. Expert support ensures no member of Sally’s family face these struggles alone.
Initially, I was reluctant to accept anything from [Melbourne] Legacy. I felt that I shouldn’t… I know there are a lot of people worse off than me. But now… they feel like extended family."

Melbourne Legacy’s commitment to providing a helping hand during some of the family’s toughest moments has made all the difference. The support she received wasn’t merely about addressing immediate needs—it was about empowering her family to rebuild their lives and find community, step by step.
Melbourne Legacy are non-judgemental guardian angels for the family.”
One intervention in particular meant more than any other: an ADHD assessment for Sam. These costly assessments are often out of reach for many families of veterans, despite the large number of children we support with neurodiversity. After years of struggling at school academically and with friends, this assessment gave Sam and the family the tools they needed to grow, and he recently achieved an ATAR of 96, one of the highest scores in his year. He now has his sights set on a double degree in engineering and science. Sally, their family and the team at Melbourne Legacy couldn’t be prouder.
Today, Sally and her children are on a path of recovery and transformation. The healing process is ongoing, but with the help of Melbourne Legacy, they have found hope, community, and a sense of purpose. Their story is a powerful reminder that even in the aftermath of trauma, families can emerge stronger and more connected.
It is so nice to have someone care. We do feel socially isolated - so to know that someone else is thinking of our family, looking out for us, it is incredibly reassuring for us both."

Sally's story, like so many others, underscores the vital importance of community, compassion, and steadfast support when a loved one loses their life or health in service to our nation.
Melbourne Legacy remains dedicated to its mission—to empower the families of veterans with the resources, support, and community they need to thrive, no matter the challenges they face.
With your support, we can reach more families like Sally's with critical support when they need it most.
