Simplifying the Path to Support

March 16, 2026

Accessing help through the Department of Veteran’s Affairs( DVA )is often reported as difficult due to complex, slow, and sometimes intimidating administrative processes.

These barriers are particularly significant for older widows, who may struggle to understand what they are entitled to or how to access the support available to them.

Legatees play an important role in the lives of widows and the families of veterans, providing companionship and day to day support. They also collaborate closely with Melbourne Legacy case managers to ensure beneficiaries receive tailored support, particularly when it comes to navigating services and entitlements.

Case managers are well versed in DVA processes and are able to ease the burden on beneficiaries by guiding them through the often arduous approval procedures and significant paperwork involved.

Melbourne Legacy case worker Kath has reflected on the importance of strong communication between Legatees and case managers.

Recently, a Legatee contacted Kath regarding Mary*, a widow who required assistance obtaining a wheelchair. While Legacy would ordinarily be able to provide this support directly, Mary holds a Gold Card, meaning she is eligible to receive a wheelchair through the DVA.

Kath was able to assist Mary in navigating the process of accessing this entitlement. The application required documentation to be completed and signed off by a physiotherapist. Throughout the process, Kath remained in close contact with Mary’s daughter, guiding her through the paperwork and explaining each step involved.

"It is very challenging navigating the many forms and processes needed to access DVA support for eligible veterans and widows.” Kath explained.

“Getting information can sometimes seem convoluted and frustrating for widows and families who are trying to help their loved one to access support they are eligible for.”

Thanks to Kath’s support, Mary has now received approval and is awaiting her wheelchair. It’s a simple outcome, but one that highlights the powerful impact of having someone who understands the system and can help guide beneficiaries and their families through it. This saves significant time and worry for the families involved.

“It is so heartwarming being able to simplify processes for widows and families.  This wheelchair will exponentially improve Mary’s quality of life and remove some stress for family members.” Kath said.
