What Support Looks Like for the Families of Veterans Today

June 03, 2026

For more than 100 years, Melbourne Legacy has stood beside the families of veterans, offering practical support, compassionate care and enduring connection through some of life’s most difficult moments.

Today, the needs of the families of veterans are changing, and Melbourne Legacy is adapting with them. By continuously improving the way support is delivered and reducing barriers to access, we are helping families facing increasingly complex circumstances find stability, healing and hope.

Melbourne Legacy’s work is focused on a long-term, relationship-based model of care. Support is not one-off or transactional. It is built on trusted connections that adapt as a family’s needs evolve over time, helping children, young people and caregivers feel seen, supported and empowered for the future.

Through our Community Services team, Melbourne Legacy provides tailored and expert support that responds to the real and varied challenges families face, including:

Financial Assistance and Crisis Relief

Financial stress can place enormous pressure on families already carrying the impact of service-related trauma and loss. Melbourne Legacy’s Financial Literacy program, delivered in collaboration with fellow ESO Bravery Trust, is designed to help families build confidence, strengthen money management skills and create a more secure future.

Working closely with Bravery Trust’s specialist Financial Counsellors, Melbourne Legacy Case Managers provide tailored guidance, individual assessment and practical support to help beneficiaries move towards long-term financial stability.

Education Support and Tutoring

Melbourne Legacy has always had a strong focus on enabling the children of veterans to thrive. Through targeted funding, tutoring and tailored development opportunities, Legacy supports each child’s educational and social development, giving young people the chance to grow in confidence, pursue their goals and feel supported every step of the way.

Counselling Referrals and Wellbeing Support

Isolation and disconnection can be deeply felt by the families of veterans, especially after years of disruption, relocation or the challenges that can follow military service. Melbourne Legacy works to foster connection, belonging and emotional wellbeing by linking beneficiaries with support, community and others who understand their experience. These relationships can be life-changing, strengthening resilience and reminding families that they are not alone.

Youth Development and Peer Connection

A key part of Melbourne Legacy’s support is its structured, professionally supervised youth camps. These experiences are about far more than time away — they give young people a safe space to build friendships, develop confidence, strengthen leadership skills and connect with peers who share similar lived experiences. For many, these moments become turning points in their sense of belonging and self-belief.

Navigation Through Complex Systems

Accessing entitlements and support through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs can be complex and overwhelming. Melbourne Legacy provides expert guidance and advocacy to help beneficiaries understand the process, navigate claims and access the assistance available to them.

By walking alongside families step by step, Melbourne Legacy helps ensure they receive the support they are entitled to — easing stress, improving stability and creating stronger foundations for the future.

In the past 12 months alone, Melbourne Legacy has delivered more than $500,000 in direct welfare and wellbeing support to families experiencing financial and personal hardship.

This life-changing work can only continue with your support. A donation to Melbourne Legacy helps ensure the families of veterans receive the practical care, connection and opportunities they need not just to get by, but to move forward with strength and stability.
