Reflecting and Remembering this ANZAC Day

April 10, 2026

The 25th of April, ANZAC Day, is one of Australia’s most important occasions in the national calendar.

This day is more than just a time of remembrance; it is also a time where we pause for reflection, acknowledging the enduring legacy of the ANZACs. We strive to honour the sacrifices they made that continue to shape the Australia of today.

From the time they landed on the shores of Gallipoli in 1915, the unwavering resolve demonstrated by the soldiers of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps has left a powerful mark on our national identity.

Although the operation was anticipated to be a quick action that would remove Turkey from World War I, it escalated into an eight-month battle with heavy casualties on both sides. More than 8,700 Australian soldiers lost their lives and another 19,441 were wounded.

In this campaign, the ANZAC Spirit was born, and it exemplified the values of courage, resilience, and mateship. Those qualities have transcended time and remain vital to the spirit of Australia today.

The families of these soldiers who remained at home also showed tremendous perseverance and resilience. They provided a vital support to the front line. Families were heavily involved in the war effort and supported soldiers by providing comforts, such as food, clothing, and supplies.

ANZAC Day was officially recognised in 1916, one year after the Gallipoli landing. These first ANZAC Day marches and ceremonies were driven by families grieving their lost loved ones.

Today, our community continues this tradition of remembrance and reflection. From attending Dawn Services to baking ANZAC biscuits, communities come together to remember the sacrifices of those soldiers at Gallipoli and all those who have served since, and those who continue to serve.

During this time, we also recognise the families and loved ones who for over 110 years have stood behind our service men and women. Their support, sacrifice, and strength provided an enormous contribution to our country. One that Legacy will never forget.

It is Legacy’s role to provide support to the families who have had their lives changed significantly because of their loved one’s service.

From its beginnings, Melbourne Legacy has represented hope and resilience in the face of loss. As a newspaper fittingly noted in 1956, "Legacy has salvaged more happiness and achievement from the wreck and sorrow of war than perhaps any other movement of its kind in the world."

As we honour the sacrifices of the ANZACs, we are also reminded of our responsibility to care for the families of veterans. For many families, the impact of service doesn’t end when the ceremony does.

By supporting Legacy, you can help ensure that these families continue to receive the assistance, guidance, and community they deserve. This ANZAC Day, we invite you to show your support for our veterans by caring for the families they love.
