The 94th ANZAC Commemoration for Students

May 09, 2026

On Tuesday the 5th of May, Melbourne Legacy held the 94th ANZAC Commemoration for Students at the Shrine of Remembrance. More than 3,450 students and teachers gathered to honour and remember the ANZACs in a moving ceremony dedicated to reflection, service, and remembrance.

Melbourne Legacy Vice President Kerry Jenke served as Master of Ceremonies, providing insightful commentary throughout the event. The ceremony was enriched by musical performances from the Mac.Robertson Girls' High School Choir and the Melbourne High School Band.

Distinguished guests included Lieutenant-Governor Professor James Angus AO, Brigadier Michelle McCormack, and Melbourne Legacy President Legatee Michael Annett, all of whom delivered engaging addresses to the students in attendance.

Students also heard from Ajay Sonti, winner of the National Legacy Junior Public Speaking Competition, who presented his award-winning speech, Listen to Remember. Ajay’s speech was an engaging tribute to the importance of listening in the act of remembrance. Through humorous quips and heartfelt anecdotes, Ajay highlighted the importance of finding out the human side of history through storytelling.

The ceremony included formal proceedings, wreath laying, and moments of reflection, giving students a meaningful opportunity to deepen their understanding of the sacrifices made by the ANZACs.

Melbourne Legacy supports many families with school-aged children, and opportunities such as the ANZAC Student Commemoration play an important role in fostering understanding among young people.

On the day, Jasmine Shelley represented Melbourne Legacy as the Junior Legatee Torch Bearer. Jasmine and her mother, Shabina, have been longstanding beneficiaries of Melbourne Legacy and are a powerful example of how Legacy supports the families of veterans to thrive.

Six Young Ambassadors from the Shrine also played significant roles in the ceremony. Milly Naylor and Anaya Goyal laid a wreath on behalf of the Shrine Young Ambassador cohort, while Augustus Buividas and Scarlett Thomas presented wreaths to the Lieutenant-Governor and the Melbourne Legacy President. Eleanor Jones formed part of the official greeting party for dignitaries, and Hayley Karachiwala carried out her role as torch bearer, marching alongside the Tri-Party to pass the Melbourne Legacy Torch to Jasmine Shelley.

Events such as the ANZAC Student Commemoration are integral in preserving the memory and spirit of the ANZACs for future generations, ensuring their legacy continues to be honoured for years to come.

Melbourne Legacy extends its sincere thanks to the Victorian State Government, the VVC, and the Shrine of Remembrance for their ongoing support of the ANZAC Commemoration for Students.
